Guide to carpet pile, Floor Coverings International Spring Branch

Most people don’t think too much about the carpet underfoot until it’s worn out and ready for a replacement. Then, it quickly becomes clear just how complex the world of carpeting really is. Color, fiber, texture, and pile all come into play, and picking the right carpeting for your home in the Houston area can seem tough.

Following is everything you need to know about carpet pile. You can also check out our product pages to learn more about the different styles of carpet that might be perfect for your home or office.

What is carpet pile?

Carpet pile simply refers to the upper layer of fiber that is attached to a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but today there are many other natural and synthetic options available. Synthetics are typically more cost-effective than wool and can stand up to traffic and spills better than many natural fibers. That said, some families prefer to use natural products in the home. The best option for you really depends on your budget and preferences.

Pile Height

Carpeting is available in a variety of pile heights, ranging from ¼ inch to ¾ inch or more. Flat carpets are short pile, while your standard 70s shag is considered a long pile carpet. The height is measured from the surface of the carpet to the backing. A thicker pile doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality. While the plushness and comfort of long pile carpets make them preferable to many homeowners, long pile carpets have a tendency to crush under foot and furniture. Short pile carpets, on the other hand, are easier to keep clean and may last longer when properly cared for.

Loop vs. Cut Pile Carpet

Just to add another layer of complexity to the pile discussion, buyers must also consider loop versus cut pile carpet when selecting a new floor covering. All carpet starts out as loop pile, however these loops are often clipped, resulting in a smooth and even carpet surface.

Loop pile carpets are not clipped (think your tradition Berber carpet) resulting in a carpet that is highly durable and great for high traffic areas. The pile height can vary among cut and loop carpet, with the longer pile providing a more luxurious surface, and the short pile bring more durability to the surface.
